Reading Proposals

Angelina:

Slade House by David Mitchell is more than a thrilling novel. The plot catches readers in moments and leaves them to explore Slade House along side the characters. Stumbling into rooms they never knew existed, opening doors to ideas that never seemed possible; the novel presents us with an opportunity to grow, maybe even change. Slade House is an opportunity to experience the methods of the course on a dimension of learning.

Sierra:

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green explores how we balance our own pursuits and tendency to get sucked into our own thoughts, while still trying to be decent to everyone around us.

Paige:

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a semi-autobiographical book with changed names. I read her poetry in my CWII class last fall and was interested in her life. I think this will be an enjoyable choice for my group because it talks about mental illness, and pleasant to read about the metaphors used for them.

Fear Gone Wild: A Story of Mental Illness, Suicide, and Hope Through Loss by Kayla Stocklein

Mental Illness has always been an important issue for me. I always felt that those with a mental illness have been tragically misunderstood. Even depression, in my opinion, often gets misunderstood by those who do not struggle with it. I especially see the misconceptions from the mainstream media. Its common to see a victim of mental illness being portrayed in a horror film, or the mental illness is fantasized in shows like 13 Reasons Why. Maybe reading this book will provide better insight on what it is like to struggle with mental illness and how it affects those around the mentally ill.
